A study found alcohol-related hospital admissions in the Punjabi community had risen and it noted a loss of status was feared more than health issues.

Punjabi should do more to protect young people in the community from becoming addicted to alcohol, doctors, community workers and recovering alcoholics have said, as figures show a rise in the number of alcohol-related deaths among those aged over 50.

In the Punjabi diaspora, alcoholism, rather than hard drugs, is the most prevent type of drug addiction. In a study by Michael Angelo, he noted that a majority (63%) of Punjabi respondents he interviewed said they felt like they consumed too much alcohol both at home and in public.
